Fox Chase Researchers Connect Multifocal/Multicentric Breast Cancer to a Patient’s Increased Risk of Local Recurrence, November 7, 2012

Not all women diagnosed with operable breast cancer present with a single tumor, some have multifocal disease appear in the breast—which means multiple tumors all arising from the same primary tumor. Others face a diagnosis of multicentric disease, where multiple tumors have formed independently in the breast. Standard radiation treatment is not tailored to the number of tumors found in the breast, so patients with multifocal or multicentric disease do not receive radiation after mastectomy and if they undergo lumpectomy, they receive the same dose and extent as patients presenting with a single mass.


Improving the Safety of Angioplasty in Patients with Coronary Bypass Graft Disease, November 7, 2012

Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital have shown that combining distal protection devices with the prophylactic use of the drug nicardipine is more effective at preventing life-threatening complications following a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (angioplasty, stenting) on patients who have undergone previous bypass surgery than distal protection devices alone. Their findings were presented at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference by Michael P. Savage, MD, director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Jefferson.


Temple to Implant Total Artificial Heart, November 7, 2012

Philadelphia -- One of the world’s most advanced medical devices for end-stage heart failure patients will soon be available at Temple University Hospital. Later this fall, Temple physicians will be certified to implant the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart. Currently, only 32 adult hospitals in the United States are certified to implant the device. Initially, Temple expects to implant between five and ten of the devices a year.

Originally used as a permanent replacement heart, the Total Artificial Heart is currently approved as a “bridge to transplant” for people with end-stage heart failure affecting both ventricles, known as biventricular failure.
